NHS Long Term Workforce Plan
NHS England · work from 2022 · published 2023
What this was
The first long-term workforce plan for the NHS in England. It set out expansion of training, new roles, and retention, against demand modelled to the mid-2030s.
Why it sits in the hub
Safe staffing is the recommendation underneath Ockenden, mental health inquiries and Berwick. This plan is the national response. Training posts and retention have not moved in a straight line since publication, and later policy has revisited the numbers.
Findings
Finding 1
The service could not staff current models of care, let alone the models in the Long Term Plan, without a sustained increase in training and retention.
