NHS Five Year Forward View
Simon Stevens · work from 2014 · published 2014
What this was
The national strategy that replaced a single blueprint with new models of care: more prevention, more care out of hospital, and organisations working together. It was a plan rather than an inquiry, and it set the frame for the decade that followed.
Why it sits in the hub
Integration, new care models and the gap between funding and demand all start here in their modern form. Fuller, Hewitt and the 10 Year Health Plan are later chapters of the same argument.
Findings
Finding 1
The NHS could not meet need by doing more of the same inside hospitals.
Recommendations in this hub
Paraphrase of the public recommendations, not the official text.
- 1Partly doneNHS England
Develop place-based models that join primary, community, mental health and hospital care.
Vanguards and then integrated care systems followed. Hewitt later found the centre still over-directed them.
- 2Partly doneNHS and government
Shift effort towards prevention and a radical upgrade in public health.
