Examining new options and opportunities for providers of NHS care
Sir David Dalton · work from 2014 · published 2014
What this was
Review of how NHS organisations might combine: groups, chains, acquisitions and management franchises. It was a response to trusts that could not sustain quality on their own.
Why it sits in the hub
It legitimised organisational change as a quality intervention. Mergers since have a mixed record, which is why later reviews keep separating 'new structure' from 'safer care'.
Findings
Finding 1
Some providers could not credibly reach a safe, sustainable service without a different organisational form.
Recommendations in this hub
Paraphrase of the public recommendations, not the official text.
- 1Partly doneNHS England and government
Give successful organisations a practical route to support or take on weaker ones.
- 2Not publicly clearBoards
Judge any new form by whether it improves care, not by the transaction itself.
